Were you like me and expecting Denver to grab Brian Orakpo at #12? Afterall, this draft was all about the defensive rebuild in the Mile High City.
Since Josh McDaniels doesn't do anything expected of him. No surprise that he took Knowshon Mareno.
BTW. The name Knowshon comes from his dad's nickname of Knowledge and his mother's name of Vara-shon. There you go.
The draft has an interesting way of making teams change their mind. Mareno the highest rated RB in the draft was unclaimed come Broncos pick time. So what do you do? Take the best player available as the saying goes.
That was Mareno. Am I alone here in thinking that Mareno will help the Denver offence? He'll sustain the ground game, control the clock, perhaps make 3rd and long into 3rd and short for Orton.
If your offence is on the field, running down the clock, then your defence isn't on the field.
Broncos were one of the worst teams in the NFL last season in the red zone. Didn't Cutler lead the NFL in red zone turnovers last season?
Having a top notch running back inside the 20 yeard line will be of great benefit to the Broncos in 2009.
So upon further review. Taking the first RB in the draft, is ok.
